Your GIT installation is broken.  I just checked the alternates file
(that is, in my repository, there's not all the Linux history, but
only a few KB or MB describing vax-linux history. All common files are
fetched from Linus's tree.)  It's okay.

It used to be, yes.  Just checked, with my GIT-1.3.3 it works as
expected. Just updating to your newer version.

With the new GIT installation (1.4.2.3-1), checking out worked, too.
So it seems the backported package contains a bug :-/
