[LV] Can anybody build a kernel with Maciej's toolchain?

Hi, I have built a Linux kernel with my repackaged version of Maciej's cross toolchain and everything seems to work fine -- except that I can't make it boot all the way up in simh (I don't have real hardware). Do any of you have an idea of what's going on? Is my .config wrong? Do I need to use setcmdline on vmlinux.dsk first? Can anybody else build a vmlinux.dsk for me with Maciej's toolchain that works? I should perhaps try to update my git checkout of two weeks ago -- but would it change anything? Since the shift amount is what causes the trouble, I felt it was better to name that value than the return value, which in any case becames much easier to read after removal of ' - 1' and '>> 1' and naming of the shift amount. (linux-vax(a)pergamentum.com only bcc'ed because it's subscribers only, Lameter addressed because I think he touched the code last, Velikov and Hellwig because they touched the code first.) The current code in __max_index() will shift by a negative amount first and only then fix the situation by ignoring the result if the shift amount would have been negative. This happens to work on almost any architecture despite not being valid C. Chapter and verse from the (draft) ISO C99 standard, "6.5.7 Bitwise shift operators", paragraph 3: "The integer promotions are performed on each of the operands. The type of the result is that of the promoted left operand. If the value of the right operand is negative or is greater than or equal to the width of the promoted left operand, the behavior is undefined." Right-shifting by a negative amount causes a "reserved operand fault" on the VAX with some gcc versions. Applies to 2.6.22. Boot tested lightly on an emulated VAX. Hi, I have repackaged Maciej Rozycki's toolchain RPMs as a single autopackage which can be found at: http://vax64.dk/vax-toolchain/ Neither the RPMs nor the SRPMs worked for me on Feisty Fawn (more about this later) so the Autopackage should prove useful to other Ubuntu users (and Debian and Slackware and ...). Autopackages can install 1) on most recentish Linux distributions and 2) have a nice graphical installer and 3) can install "per-user". Hi! As you might have seen, I've started some hacking these days. Toolchain ~~~~~~~~~ Kernel-only compiler builds successfully with current upstream binutils and GCC. It's seems to even be capable of -O2 compilation (cf. arch/vax/Makefile, where we used to downgrade to -O1). Really nice to see this. build_toolchain.sh however, won't build a userland capable cross-compiler (and this not a userland capable GCC running on your VAX) due to some uClibc issues. (Seems some limits.h bits are missing there, quite a minor issue I guess.) Kernel ~~~~~~ I've merged Linus's current GIT, which is at about 2.6.23-rc2, and also fixed some of the fallout. Fixing this is, though, not yet done completely, (*hint* *hint*) I'll accept pull requests. [LV] The Linux binutils 2.17.50.0.18 is released

This is the beta release of binutils 2.17.50.0.18 for Linux, which is based on binutils 2007 0731 in CVS on sourceware.org plus various changes. It is purely for Linux. All relevant patches in patches have been applied to the source tree. You can take a look at patches/README to see what have been applied and in what order they have been applied. Starting from the 2.17.50.0.4 release, the default output section LMA (load memory address) has changed for allocatable sections from being equal to VMA (virtual memory address), to keeping the difference between LMA and VMA the same as the previous output section in the same region. For data.init_task : { *(.data.init_task) } LMA of .data.init_task section is equal to its VMA with the old linker. With the new linker, it depends on the previous output section. You can use data.init_task : AT (ADDR(.data.init_task)) { *(.data.init_task) } to ensure that LMA of .data.init_task section is always equal to its VMA. The linker script in the older 2.6 x86-64 kernel depends on the old behavior. You can add AT (ADDR(section)) to force LMA of data.init_task section equal to its VMA. It will work with both old and new linkers. The x86-64 kernel linker script in kernel 2.6.13 and above is OK. The new x86_64 assembler no longer accepts monitor %eax,%ecx,%edx You should use monitor %rax,%ecx,%edx or monitor which works with both old and new x86_64 assemblers. They should generate the same opcode. The new i386/x86_64 assemblers no longer accept instructions for moving between a segment register and a 32bit memory location, i.e., movl (%eax),%ds movl %ds,(%eax) To generate instructions for moving between a segment register and a 16bit memory location without the 16bit operand size prefix, 0x66, mov (%eax),%ds mov %ds,(%eax) should be used. It will work with both new and old assemblers. The assembler starting from 2.16.90.0.1 will also support movw (%eax),%ds movw %ds,(%eax) without the 0x66 prefix.
