There's a *lot* of hidden knowledge about building (and hacking) GCC. Of course, most of that is well-documented somewhere, but you won't find it easily when you need it :)
So you'd first go and download/build/install the binutils package.

After re-reading toolchain/scripst/README and friends (esp build_*.sh), much stuffing around and various false-starts I appear to have something resembling success:
