usb mouse: "unknown protocol: usb"

Hi,
hab heute vormittag mal mit USB rumgespielt. Die Maus tut ohne
Probleme in gpm und unter X macht sie solange keine Probleme, wie
ich das PS/2 Emulation device in /dev/input/mice benutze und ganz
normal "Protocol ImPS/2" angebe. Es müßte aber laut Doku auch
möglich sein, "Protocol usb" zu sagen. Der X-Server quittiert das
allerdings immer mit "unknown protocol: usb". Außerdem hab ich
auch nirgendwo gefunden, welches device man dann benutzen muß
(/dev/usbmouse ist es aber wohl nicht, da sagt er mir "No such
device"). Hat das jemand am Laufen?
Ich hab übrigens Debian sid, xfree 4.03-1
