Vielleicht ist TeX das falsche Werkzeug, aber Word ist noch
falscher, da es andere Anforderungen nicht erfüllen kann
(Dokumente mit mehr als 20 Seiten absturzfrei, vernünftige
Darstellung von Formeln, Plattformunabhängigkeit usw.). Insofern
war TeX das, was am nächsten ran kam und daher das Tool der Wahl
mangels Alternativen, zumindest in der pre-xml Ära. Jetzt gehts
langsam los mit Layout per Stylesheet und wirklich benutzbaren
Lösungen.
