$ ssh root at workstation

workstation:~ # echo $USER

root     pts/1    Aug 30 12:16 (windose.mydomain.de)
workstation:~ # whoami

Vielleicht hilft Dir das ja weiter. Auf jeden Fall kenn ich das von mir beschriebene
Verhalten schon seit ein paar Jahren.
Vermutlich basiert das von mir beschriebenen Verhalten auf dem gleichen Problem
wie Deins.
