GPL exscape sequences

Hi,
immer wenn ich einen Blick in eine der GPL-Dateien werfe
fallen mir die Escape-Sequenzen auf.

Beispiel:
  The precise terms and conditions for copying, distribution
  and
  modification follow.
  ^L

Kann mir irgendjemand sagen, warum die da drin sind?
